Jerry referred to playing music as a “public service.”
The album tracks on Front Street Outtakes are composed of rare studio outtakes from a 1994 recording session featuring Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and Sanjay Mishra, an Indian American guitarist-composer. The collaboration showcases a new direction the ever-creative Garcia was beginning to explore on his musical journey.
The unreleased recordings on “Front Street Outtakes” represent one of Garcia’s last full album recording projects completed at the Grateful Dead’s iconic Club Front Studios. The recordings originate from unedited material used in the creation of the 1995 album “Blue Incantation.”
As with all of Sanjay Mishra’s work, the music on the album has a multicultural and eclectic appeal. It merges Eastern and Western influences, combining Mishra’s brilliantly Indian-inspired guitar textures with Garcia’s masterful musical fluidity.
A charitable component of the “Front Street Outtakes” project will benefit Paramahansa Yogananda’s Self-Realization Fellowship. Yogananda is known for writing the highly acclaimed “Autobiography of a Yogi.” Self-Realization Fellowship is a worldwide spiritual organization founded by Paramahansa Yogananda to serve as an instrument for the preservation and worldwide dissemination of his writings and teachings, including Kriya Yoga.
Jerry Garcia Music Arts will donate 25% of its net revenue from every digital music stream of the album to Self-Realization Fellowship.
“Front Street Outtakes” was mastered by Grammy Award-winning audio engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. The album will be available on most digital streaming platforms.
Jerry played the "Wolf" guitar for this recording session. The instrument, built by Luthier Doug Irwin in 1973, became legendary as it appeared with Jerry in front of audiences across the planet from San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom to New York City's Palladium to the Great Pyramids in Egypt.
Reflecting on the music that he produced with Garcia, Mishra commented, “Unique and mysterious, these mixes consist of the recordings in pure form, with just the guitars and percussion, all unedited, including the tape reel running out on the first track.”
The three album tracks on “Front Street Outtakes” are titled “Loving Sky,” “Dancing” and “Pranam.”
Referring to the first track, production consultant Philip Melia, a Liverpool native and guitarist for the Pete Best Band, discussed the soul-touching “Loving Sky” experience: “Starting with a sparse and flowing luscious sound, bound to a honey-dripping solo guitar and organic tabla percussion, listen whilst looking at the sky and you can be anywhere.”
The visual elements of this music release include a booklet of liner notes featuring rare in-studio photos of the recording session along with Garcia’s music-themed pen-and-ink drawing “Uncorrected Manuscript.” This image, in its unedited and pure form, can be interpreted as a visual metaphor for the recordings on “Front Street Outtakes.”
The liner notes booklet and newly published limited-edition giclées of “Uncorrected Manuscript” are available at the Terrapin Gallery website. Sold Out

The music is offered as a holiday gift to the community this Christmas Eve in the form of 10,000 free steams available on multiple digital platforms. The August 10th, 1991, live recording was mastered by Joe Gastwirt, a highly acclaimed audio engineer, who Garcia referred to as a “whiz kid” in a 1987 WNEW Radio interview. Joe’s discography includes the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Yes, and Crosby, Stills Nash and Young. The song “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love,” written in 1964 by preacher and singer Solomon Burke, songwriter and record producer Bert Berns and music journalist Jerry Wexler, is about the virtues and gifts of love. It has recently gained popularity as the song in a 2019 Amazon holiday commercial and was featured on the soundtrack for the 1980 musical comedy film “The Blues Brothers.” Earlier this year, the song was released by Round Records on CD and vinyl as part of the Jerry Garcia Band Live “Electric on the Eel” album. “We’re honored to help present a gift of my father’s music this holiday season,” said Keelin Garcia, daughter of Garcia and the president/founder of Jerry Garcia Music Arts. “His music lives on for all to enjoy and celebrate.” In addition, a fine art element of this project features a limited-edition release of a Jerry Garcia pen and ink drawing titled “Merry Christmas.” This whimsical piece, a cheerful drawing of jolly Saint Nick and a reindeer, is water-colored by Keelin. The piece will be available to the public online through early January at the Terrapin Gallery. Soid Out. The visual art component of the project will benefit Vanessa and Jorma Kaukonen’s Psylodelic Gallery. The Psylodelic Gallery is housed in a revitalized grain silo and is located at the Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch in Pomeroy, Ohio. The Gallery celebrates the music, art, culture and literature of the 1960s, while tracing important events and movements of the psychedelic era. The gallery houses Jorma’s personal collections of artifacts, photographs & posters from his long career as a musician from Jefferson Airplane to Hot Tuna. A permanent collection of Jerry Garcia’s fine art is featured at the Psylodelic Gallery. |
